Bernard LeBlanc, a husband, a father, a son, a friend, a mentor and a marathon runner who approached his life with enthusiasm, a sense of humor and a true joy of life.
Unfortunately, on July 25, 2002, at the age of 46, Bernard was diagnosed with lung cancer. Very shortly after the diagnosis Bernard was operated on at the Credit Valley Hospital. Following the surgery, radiation therapy was required. Due to his excellent overall health only two months later, Bernard was back outside running to raise money for a charitable cause. But this wonderful energy was soon replaced by pain. The cancer was active again. Bernard began chemotherapy treatment but the cancer was very aggressive and the actual treatments available did not work. For two years, Bernard fought a courageous battle being sure he would be able to beat it. |

During all this time, Bernard and his wife were supported by the excellent staff including palliative care doctor, oncologists, nurses, community care access centre, social workers and the minister at the Credit Valley Hospital. Their compassion and dedication to patient's well being assisted Bernard throughout his most difficult period. In fact Bernard married his 17 year soul mate, Diane, while at the hospital.
While Bernard succumbed to his illness on September 22, 2004 the need to continue the fight against all cancers is essential to all of us. Each one of us can make a difference. |
